Dragon Ball - The Movie

Ok, I don't intend on keeping this blog exclusively for sketches, and I plan on approaching movies, music, comics and whatever else on my posts, as I always have until now, whenever I have the will/time. In that spirit, today I want to discuss this:

Now tell me this... am I the only one who thinks this looks like complete and utter crap? (by the way, that is rethorical. I know I'm not.). It looks so cheap and poorly done. Like someone just pasted a lot of shit together in photoshop and tried to tie it all together with red swirls and lens flares. Look at Piccolo's evil eyes in the background... that is horrible. Not to mention that the characters are all wrong. Can you even tell Chow Yun Fat is supposed to be Master Roshi? He has NONE of the character's traits. And it's not like it would have been complicated to make the character look like it did in the anime/manga: just shave your head and grow a beard and put some sunglasses, and voilá! He wouldn't even need the turtle shell. But no. This crap is better.

Honestly though, I never had any expectations for this movie. I'm a huge Dragon Ball fan, and I've been since I was a kid. I've seen the whole anime (except GT, that sucks monkey balls) and read the whole manga. I think the source material is very difficult to successully adapt to the big screen on live action, and ever since the first casting anoucements that I think the actors are just wrong. The first photos I saw were so shitty, everything looked like it was straight out of a Power Rangers episode. And now this. If the guys in the graphic department can't come up with a better banner than this, then I imagine what's going on with the movie. Either it's gonna bomb or the director is purposelly releasing shit promotional material to throw us off, when in reality the movie is going to be all kinds of awesome.

But yeah, I don't think so. Oh well.

Pretty self-explanatory little sketch. Enjoy!

Dwight

I just recently got into The Office US, and I think it's delightful (I'm on the 3rd season, so please don't go spoiling anything for me). The characters are awesome, the actors do a great job, and the humor is, well, rather kick ass. So, after sketching a few of the characters, I decided to throw some super quick colors on this little Dwight sketch.

Enjoy!

Patrick Bateman

I'm a big fan of the movie American Psycho. I know there's not a lot of people who appreciate it, but to me it's one of the best dark satirical movies ever, with great interpretations, twisted characters, awesome dialogue, and cheesy 80s music. Plus, you know - Christian Bale is bloody amazing in it. So here is a little sketch (very old-ish) of the sexiest movie serial killer ever, Patrick Bateman. If you'll excuse me, I have to return some videotapes.

"Hey, brother"

My exam is tomorrow, but I didn't upload anything yesterday so I'm hoping to make it up today with this sketch of Buster Bluth, a character from the awesome show Arrested Development.

I already posted this video once before, but now that I'm reviving the blog, here it goes again. I think it's a nice sum up of the crazy dysfunctional Bluth family, and their entertaining misfortunes.

Enjoy, and if you'd be so kind to wish me good luck to the exam, I'd appreciate it :D

Indy

Gah, I'm going crazy from all this genetics. I managed to do a little sketch in between studying transcription and translation (curse you, thousands of enzymes and crap involved!!), it's a weird Indiana Jones. I hope you guys enjoy it - just like I hoped that the 4th movie would be good. Oh well. No point on dwelling on it :) Here's to the Indy memories!

D. Afonso Henriques

Just because today is a holiday - Portugal's Day - here is the drawing I did of Portugal's first king, D. Afonso Henriques.

I know it's not new, but it's adequate for the day, and in all honesty I didn't have the time to sketch up something new. Damn you, exams! Still, hope you enjoy!

Teenage Mutant Zombie Turtles

Another simple sketch, done while studying. Yes, I drew a zombie while turning into one myself, from too much studying! Hope you enjoy.

Mario

A simple sketch of good ol' Mario, done with bic pens, while studying last night. I swear, genetics gives me a headache.

Stand by Your Manatee

The manatee is a large aquatic mammal, sometimes called the Sea Cow, that lives in warm, shallow waters. They belong to the Order Sirenia, and include 3 of its 4 species (the other one being the Dugong). Like so many other animals these days, they are vulnerable to extinction. But this isn't a science lesson, and I did this little intro just to make this post sound a little less silly. Why would it be silly, you ask? Well, because I'll just post a drawing of a manatee I did after hearing a funny song about a Manatee that is dating a human girl.

You can listen to the song next:

Remember to stand by your manatee!

Angry Videogame Nerd

Formerly known as Angry Nintendo Nerd - but being forced to change the name due to possible copyright issues - the Angry Videogame Nerd is a character created by James Rolfe, that stars in a lot of popular videos, reviewing games that are old and a "shitload of fuck", in his words. I really enjoy his videos - the first ones are especially funny - so it wasn't hard to get to work and do a little "tribute" piece to him. Fellow deviantartists already know this piece, but I'm hoping someone out of DA gets a kick out of it too.

In case you're living under a rock and don't know the Nerd's videos, head right on to his myspace page, where you'll find link to all the reviews. Find them here: AVGN on Myspace

Lovecraft

This is a sketch I did today, with a bic pen, while I was taking a break from my (painful) studies. It's H. P. Lovecraft, surrounded by some tentacles - I thought it was fitting.

I've been a fan of Lovecraft's work since I came in contact with a compilation book of some of his stories a few years ago. If you don't know him, and you're a fan of horror literature, or just horror in general, you should look him up and read his stuff. He's work influenced John Carpenter, Stephen King, Mike Mignola, Neil Gaiman, Guillermo del Toro and many more. Not bad, huh?

The Comedian

This time I'm posting a random sketch - I've got a few of these that I never got around to posting on DA (they're nothing special, really), so maybe I can use them here. This sketch features The Comedian, a character from the graphic novel Watchmen.

Speaking of Watchmen, I'm sure everyone and their mothers already saw this, but I'm posting anyway. It's a photo of the Minutemen, the first team of heroes in the said graphic novel, released as a promotion to the upcoming movie. Looks pretty cool, and thanks to Cosmic for the heads up ;)

Tintin

Well, in an effort to REVIVE this dying blog, I'll post my newest drawing. It's an updated version of Tintin and his dog Milou (I've been told in the english version he's called Snowy). I was a big fan of Tintin's adventures when I was younger, but haven't picked up one of "his" comics in ages. I had an urge to draw this though, maybe out of nostalgia. It's nothing special and the pose is a little wonky, but well. I really need to start drawing backgrounds, though. I'm lazy.

I'm also writing in english to try and reach out to more people. I know I haven't even shown any type of dedication to this blog, but I promise I'll change that. Well, no: I promise I'll TRY to change that. We'll see how it goes.
Hope the blogger audience likes this!
